Introduction
From careful scientific measurements it is evident that the
moon is in fact receding or distancing itself from the Earth. It has been
measured that the moon recedes 3.7cm every year from the Earth.
In the Past
In the past the moon orbited the Earth a lot closer and spun
a lot faster. Over time energy has been transferred from the Earth to the moon,
which has caused the spin rate of the Earth to decline and the moon to orbit
the Earth faster. The result of the moon orbiting the Earth at a faster rate is
this distancing.
Conclusion
Eventually the recession will be such that a total solar
eclipse will not be possible and eventually the moon may even escape the Earth.
This though will take millions of years.
